    Hello all,

As I started to say last week, this week continues with much female vocal
loveliness in NYC. Most importantly, the great Vanessa Rubin starts a
two-night stint tonight. Anyone who has Snowboy's essential first Hi-Hat
comp (The True Jazz-Dance Session) will no doubt remember her sublime
Latin/Jazz-Dance killer "Mosaic." Beyond that, there's another Tessa Souter
gig, (the still-outclassed) Cassandra Wilson, and Anita O'Day. As for Anita,
the old records are still miraculous (as is her ridiculously brilliant
performance in "Jazz on a Summer's Day"). but I saw her in January, and
she's just in bad shape. She's frail, scattered, forgetful, and not in the
best voice. I wish I could have remembered her as she was. Back to better
things, the great Blossom Dearie has a new Friday/Saturday residency @
    Danny's Skylight Room.
Also in NY, the massive DJ Vadim + Russian Percussion tour starts @ the
Knitting Factory. If anyone sees the live show, please drop me a note to let
me know how it is. Looking forward to the LA gig, but not sure what to
    expect.
Elsewhere, there's much electronic and house loveliness in LA, with Dimitri
from Paris, Herbert, and Cosmo Vitelli.
A f**king great week in Chicago, with the Paul Weller tour coming through,
Ron Trent stopping in, and the sublime (in every way) Kinky, who I'm just in
love with right now. I know there's far too much hype surrounding them at
the moment, but f**k it, they're just plain brilliant (and most of them are
    FINE AS HELL).

    Respectfully,

    Brian Baltin
