    ARGH!!!!!!
Yes, yes...I've been incredibly busy up to my eyeballs! And to add to
the fun, the equipment at the radio station was once again in an
on-again, off-again tizzy. The Gonkyburg show, in all of its new
pristine glory, will be available soon...by the end of next week, I
hope. Even the Gonky cats are still waiting for the show, so everyone
hold tight. I will send out an announcement once the show is online.
THE URBAN LANDSCAPES GUEST MIX: CURL CURL
This week's Urban Landscapes Guest Mix will come from Munich-based
residentCurl Curl. In addition to being part of the Compost Records
family, he also has an online radio show that you can listen to at
http://www.curlcurl.com. Listen to his mix set during the second hour of
    this week's broadcast.
    THANKS!
Our Soul Invasion dance event was well-received by most everyone in
attendance. We've been asked if we'll do it again, and indeed we will.
Mark your calendar for Saturday August 16, which coincidentally will
also be Vinyl Record Day and--I hear--a classic cars show too! So
there's no excuse why you shouldn't get out there! Again, we are
heartened by your support...so tell your friends!
We'll also have our Eclectic Grooves event again, too. Check it out for
the fresh musical vibes that we have to offer...music that you'll be
hard-pressed to find anywhere else in the county. Lots of new and recent
goods, and maybe a few oldies too. Mark your calendar for Thursday
    August 21.
Both events will be at zPie in SLO, and will start at about 10:00pm.
They are both 18+ events, and are no-cover events.

    THIS WEEK'S REVIEWS
    Casbah 73--The Way I Am (Hitop/Spain)
Wild one from Spain's Hi-Top Records. This is my first introduction to
the label, and if the high-energy feel of this 12" is any indication
hopefully not the last. A bit of funk, a bit of Latin, and a whole lotta
spunk with some well-placed female vocal samples that elevates the tune
big time. Definitely a winner....thanks to Jonas for this gem!
    Lonesome Echo Productions--Silver Ocean (Disorient/UK)
Japanese artist Yasushi Ide and partner/engineer Yoko Ota are Lonesome
Echo Productions, and they've combined forces for this musically-astute
taster of a full-length from Mr. Bongo's Disorient imprint. Excellent
production throughout this one...jazz and soul are definite influences
here. A slew of guests are here....Pharoah Sanders, Osunlade, Apani, DJ
Spinna, and Liliana Chachian among others. Look out for the release come
    September.
    Colorblind--Novo Dia 12" (Plein Gaz/France)
Jonas knows what I like! This single has Wagon Cookin delivering yet
another dope remix, taking "Novo Dia" on some funky grooves to blend in
with the original's Latin-tinged vibes. Don't overlook the excellent
original cut either...a moodier, more mid-tempo affair.
    Hipnosis--Jazz (Perfect Toy)
    Various Artists--Creative Musicians (Perfect Toy)
Munich-based label Perfect Toy soon will make its way domestically with
its first two full-length releases, which up to now were only available
in Europe. 7" cratedigger and Into Somethin DJ Florian Keller spent five
years (on and off) crafting the "Creative Musicians" compilation of
ultra-rare 7" singles from his collection, sharing the music from the
60s and 70s. Some fine gems are present here, so you best seek this one
if you're a fan of raw soul/R&B. Also from Perfect Toy, its first proper
studio release comes from Munich-based jazz band Hipnosis. Seek out the
EP with nice remixes from Mitchell & Dewbury and Zero Crossing, as well
as vocals from Marc Frank (which is not on the album). Look for both
albums to hit the U.S. shores in August.
    Various Artists--Brazilian Beats 4 (Mr. Bongo/UK)
Gotta thank Asya for this one. This continues the quality of the
excellent Brazilian Beats series from London's Mr. Bongo label. Some
dope remixes from Faze Action, Sao Benitez, and DJ Marky & XRS. Also
from great originals from Jorge Ben ("Take It Easy My Brother
Charles"...sampled on Drumagick's "Easy Boom) & Juca Choves (a very
playful "Take Me Back To Piaui"). Been out for awhile, but worth the
    wait for me.
London Elektricity--Billion Dollar Gravy (Breakbeat Science/Hospital)
From London's Hospital Records comes the long-awaited follow-up album
from London Elektricity. Hospital co-founder Tony Colman goes solo this
time around under the moniker, and once again shows why Hospital sets
itself handedly from its contemporaries. Who ever said that drum n'bass
is dead must not have been paying attention to this forward-thinking
label, and Colman shows handedly on this album that good music is where
you find it...and it's all good! It's now domestically available through
Breakbeat Science, so grab it and go!
    Chateau Flight--Cosmic Race 12" (Versatile/France)
    It's been awhile since we've heard new music from Gilb-r & I:Cube
together as Chateau Flight, and now the duo drops its latest 12" on its
home label Versatile. It's very spacey in atmosphere with a slice of
Detroit techno, eventually coming together as one. Judge for
    yourself....it's out now.
    Albanek--Shade Of Blue (Ecco Chamber/Austria)
I'm always looking for albums that comes out of the gate with something
wonderful to hold onto and never looking back. This is definitely one of
those albums, with plenty of nice cuts for the dancefloor for good
measure. Very nice first album from Albanek, indeed. Seek out the 12"
with a remix of "Moving On" from the UK's Cuica. Don't sleep on this
    full-length, though.
    Nigel Hayes--Moving On 12" (Sunshine Enterprises/Austria)
I've gone straight for the Blacksoul Vocal Mix on this one...love the
groovy riffs (sorta like Swag, in a way) and the funky house goodness.
The original is on Nigel Hayes's "It's Your Move" album, also on Sunshine.
    D'Nell--This Thing/E2 12" (Furious Styles/UK)
The first release from Break Reform's Furious Styles imprint is an
absolute gem. I couldn't stop playing "This Thing" the second I've first
heard of it...treading on good old-fashioned soul with downbeat
sensibilties and emotional vocals to boot. It's deep, and I'm loving it.
    Various Artists--Club Bogaloo 2 (Spinning Wheel/Switzerland)
Thanks once again to Jonas for tracking this baby for me...this is the
second volume in the Club Bogaloo series from Swiss-based Spinning
Wheel, and the quality is quite apparently both in the artist lineup and
the music. Contributions from the likes of Mark de Clive-Lowe (with
vocal help from Maiya James), Max Fresh from Hidden Agenda, Alex
Phountzi from Bugz In The Attic, Russ Gabriel, and Sonic Surfer (aka Ben
Mono...one of my favorite tracks on the comp) are here. It's been out
for awhile, so do look for this one.
    Jazzinho--Yambou EP (Ecco Chamber/Austria)
Blinding goodness yet again from Vienna's Ecco Chamber label. Terrific
follow-up to Jazzinho's first storming EP. The lush Brazilian
influences are unmistakably present. Some energetic remixes here:
Sleepwalker (aka Hajime Yoshizawa from Kyoto Jazz Massive) pulls off
some magic with some stellar production on "Sim Ou Nao", and Phil Asher
puts on his Restless Soul hat to keep the flames smoldering on "Yambou."
Can I get a "wow" here? The EP should drop in September, so watch for it.
Shades of Blue: Madlib Invades Blue Note (Blue Note)
Madlib, the relentlessly talented hip-hop producer (that's an
understatement if I've ever written one), lets loose in the vaults of
famed jazz label Blue Note and gives us a masterpiece. Hybrids of jazz
and hip-hop reign supreme on "Shades of Blue," as Mr. Prolific does
justice to the choices that he's picked for this collection. Remixed
and, at times, reinterpreted, this is something to please jazz lovers,
hip-hop lovers, and plain 'ol quality music lovers all around. Seek!
