    Greetings,

First, apologies to those of you who have been receiving multiple copies of the newsletter. The mail program I'm using is a little buggy and I'm working with tech support to address several issues. Please bear with me if this one hits you twice.

I've raved incessantly about The Cinematic Orchestra in the past, so it's no surprise that I'm very excited about their upcoming U.S. tour and DVD of Man With A Movie Camera. However, after listening to the CD soundtrack, I felt just a tad let down. Make no mistake, this is a beautiful album, but I often felt like I was listening to outtakes from Everyday. Several of the songs from that record appear here in slightly altered versions (and they're fine), but I suppose I was expecting an album of entirely new compositions. Be that as it may, I urge each and every one of you to pick it up when it ships next week and to catch the U.S. tour next month.

Peven Everett: Summer Solstace - released on his Studio Confessions label, this is a curious project that is almost entirely devoid of vocals. The vibe is that of Mr. E fooling around in the studio with different drum patterns and melodies, many of which are up there in the 126-130 BPM range. Contrast that with his last album of slow soul jams and you can understand why I'm scratching my head. Definitely interesting, but may come as a shock to those expecting a straight follow-up to Studio Confessions.

KV5: Natural Science - Marc Brown and Tony Economides met nearly ten years ago and began making music together. After working with Nitin Sawhney on his last two albums and scoring hits with the band Smoke City, they began attracting bigger names to their work and KV5 was in full swing. Natural Science features guest spots from Pael Black, Nathan Haines, Nitin Sawhney, Chris Franck, Kaidi Tatham and others. Soul, reggae and jazz meet some blippy beats in a charming, off-kilter setting, making this a pretty original work. Keep your eyes on these guys in the coming year.

Natacha Atlas: Someting Dangerous - For her fifth solo album, Atlas continues to blur the boundaries between traditional Arabic music and western pop. Singing in her native tongue, as well as English, French and Hindi, she deftly incorporates bits of hip-hop, R&B, Bollywood musicals and drum & bass into her arrangements. Sinead O'Connor guests on "Simple Heart" (didn't she retire already?) and there's a stunning version of James Brown's "It's A Man's World" that's not to be missed.

Sleepwalker: S/T - There isn't much info about this Japanese jazz quartet, save for a couple of brief magazine reviews, but in the non-English liner notes, names like Kyoto Jazz Massive, Jazzanova, Wagon Cookin', Jimpster, DJ Krush and others pop-up everywhere, so you know these boys have worked with some of the best. Combining some of the best elements of old and nu-jazz, the band swings from the word go and doesn't quit until the disc is over. Super-tight and guaranteed to leave you b-b-b-breathless.

I'm off to listen to the new Pole and Dr. Alban EPs and albums by Teri Walker, Richard Dorfmeister and Zimpala

Until next week, ciao for now,
    David
