Greetings,
We're very lucky to have an extra-special guest mix this evening from
Zeljko Kerleta - the man behind London's Cosmic Sounds label. Since
1999, Cosmic Sounds has not only released a number of rare or
previously unissued East European jazz titles, but has been doing a
bang-up job of artist development and signed some exciting new acts,
such as Coxless Pair, So Hayashi, Arkestra One, Belgradeyard Sound
System and Zeljko himself. Be prepared for an exciting, eclectic mix.
The first Cosmic Sounds Remix album was one of my favorite
compilations of last year and it's safe to say that Volume 2 will
wind up on the best of 2004 year-end list. As with Volume 1, artists
and producers were asked to select a track from the CS catalog and
work their magic. Butti 49, Electrosacher, So Hayashi, Block 16 and
others did just that and the result is practically the definition of
"future jazz." From slammin' samba and modern afro-beat, to slinky,
spooky grooves and plucked, Middle-eastern-flavored strings, there
are a myriad of unusual flavors that all come together brilliantly
for a most satisfying collection. More information is available at:
http://cosmicsounds-london.com.
Sandboy: Wanderlust - After recording two albums as a member of
Beanfield, Tobias Meggle strikes out on his own with a team of
musicians, vocalists and electronics to craft a delightful debut
disc. Using instruments such as bandoneon, melodica and flugelhorn
really adds to the overall organic feel and lyrics sung in English,
French, Spanish and Portuguese make for an exotic, international
presentation. Jump jazz and bossa beats alternate with lush ballads
and include a guest appearance by vocalist Nanar from Break Reform.
Check it at: http://www.hinterland-records.com.
Nostalgia 77: Songs For My Funeral - Also known as the Hermit in
certain circles, Nostalgia 77 gets all outside and abstract, puttin'
down some funky drumbeats and filling the rest of the space with
sound effects, psychedelic flourishes and plenty of moody 'tude. This
is mos def for the heads, so fire up a bowl and cue up track
one.....nice. More news at http://www.tru-thoughts.co.uk.
That's it for this week....until next time, ciao for now!
David
