Why should you go to see Victor Wooten????

Here is a concert review from one of his New York Shows a couple of years ago!!!
    ------------------------
I sat for a couple of days trying to think what could write about the Victor
Wooten performance, and although I wrote down comments song by song what I
thought/heard, I still am 'stuplified' by what I saw.
Victor Wooten's performance should not have stumped me like it did, I have
seen him perform on satillite television in a live concert with Bela Fleck
and the Flecktones, and I thought then that 'This guy is phenominal...'
But, for some reason, it did not click in my head that this was the same guy
with the Flecktones...until we met him back stage before the show, and then I
thought 'well, it is ON now!...'
A noticeably humble personality,(with a noticable baby-face) he was very
gracious to his surroundings, and his brothers as well to the Soul Patrol
crew. It was a tight knit family affair, and much brotherly love implemented
in that room. Some one mentioned that it was Rick James' birthday, and
Brother Joseph Wooten stood in his corner and began to sing a small tribute
to Slick Rick , 'You and I'...and stated 'Rick is my man...' (for a minute,
    he sounded like him too...)
As Bob Davis conducted his interview with VW, percussionist/drummer
extrodinaire J.D. Blair entered the room, another gracious and humble
character, who bowed upon shaking your hand...more about him later...the
Brother is 'brilliant' on some skins...

Okay, after the pictures, talk and laughter...it was on with the show...
I will try to break this down as tactfully and to the point as I can
get...but the first word I want to put out in regards to Victor Wooten's
    performance is/was...

    'GOODGOOGAMOOGA.......'!!!!!!!

Okay, with that said, here is the breakdown...

The floor was standing room only. It appeared at one point that the room was
moderately empty, and then by the time I formed pen and paper to hand, there
were people of all persuasions in that ballroom, African Americans, Asians,
Latino's and Caucasians and probably a few others. I mention this because I
had not known that Victor Wooten had this type of impact on a mixed
environment, considering his music is VERY FUNKY, and people tend to
dissassociate with funk. The crowd was also noticably young, but mixed with
us older FUNKATEER's jamming on the 'one'.
Well, us Soul Patroller's lounged in the VIP section with our VIP
passes...yes, yes, we hob-nobbed with the FUNKY and FAMOUS for the evening,
why, we even had our own royalty there; The Chancellor of Soul : Mike Boone
and the 'Dukes' of Funk; Sir Charles and Lady Blanche, 'The Unific One'
Devie Boone, Publican Kenee Lee, Honorable mention to our newest SP'er to
join us on the music trail, Brother Luis Bernard, and of course the
Listmeister Bob Davis...adding myself Dame DyvaNaye Williams... Is that
    enough royalty for ya?....lol

Well, the first musical treat of the evening was DIVINITY. This sister had
her rap game down, spelling out her name with a bass and a beat backing her
up. I admired the heck out of her hair, waist length locks. My kind of
sister. She was the beginning of the 'bass-oddessy' that was to occur for the
evening, but for her opening set, I was itching to hear more of her. Her
style was very reminscent of Michelle N'Degelecello...
Then the Wooten man hisself came out... he started mess from the very
beginning...I tried to write down every song he was doing, I resorting to
looking at Bob Davis' cd for titles. I had become so intrigued with the
brother's playing style, I stopped writing at some point! Between myself, the
Dukes, the Chancellor and Unific, we spent most of the evening cheering,
losing our voices, and saying ' On this song he sounds like....' or that song
    sounds like this particular song...'
What I heard was styles directly copied from or attributed to : Sly and the
family Stone, Buddy Miles, Parliament, Bootsy, Rick James, Jimi Hendrix,
James Brown, Prince, Lenny Kravitz, Curtis Mayfield, Bela Fleck, Morris Day
and the Time, Graham Central Station, etc...etc...etc...
Yes, this brother is just that bad...'FUNK to BE DAMNED!!!!!!!'
The beauty of this show was that it wasnt just music, there was showmanship,
unlike I have seen on stage in YEARS...levatation tricks with the
instruments, and the player himself...human beat boxes, electronic woodwinds,
wah-wah boxes that recorded, call and response vocals, rapping yes, he raps
    too...astounding...

But let me shout out J.D. Blair - You ever see some one who looks like they
think beats, to the point where they look like they walk to a beat, talk to a
beat, blink their eyes to a beat, tap their fingers to a beat and got to a to
a percussion/drum set to work it out of their system? In my old music
classes, we called this a 'Beat Junkie' thus the astounding efforts/beats of
the amazing JD Blair...this brother was 'spitting out' beats, talking it out,
lyricyzing it out, tapping floors, scratching cd's, crashing cymbals,
etc...and smiled all the way....charming chap...I was throughly impressed
with him...all this and he took the time to greet the audience...talk to them
and bowed and said goodbye...like the man said in the Eddie Murphy movie
'Coming to America' 'That 'boy' iz good'.....!!!!!!!

And as for 'The Teacher' Regi Wooten to whom Victor credits for his skills -
'GreatDayInTheMornin'!!!!!!! - He floored me...first he started off 'tuning
his guitar' and went into some lead string odessey that had me almost calling
an ambulance for the Chancellor of Soul...(had to fan him a couple of
times......lol) We all stood in awe of what this man could do... and he did
it EFFORTLESSLY... he did not break a sweat, only a big country smile, which
appears to be a trade mark of the WOOTENS...
Jospeh Wooten - Mr. Vocal man so to speak...lol...reminded me of the Herbie
Hancock album with the red cover where is surrounded with the
keyboards....The brother WORKED those keys into a frenzy...and sang James
Brown songs, Sly Stone...etc, etc,....he hopped around like Sly used to do
    back in the day...(sigh...)
It was very gracious of Victor to give his family stage time...they showed
their natural behinds individually....shout out also to Rudy Wooten who was
there too playing with his brothers...how talented can a family get...Mamma
and Daddy must be proud...because I am for them...

One more honorable mention to The Genius - I know his first name is James. He
stood behind us most of the night, you know,(we didnt know who he was) in the
VIP section...lol... and then he went downstairs and played 'People Make the
World Go Round' on the bass with Victor....dueling bassists...classic
moment...and the Soul Patrol crew had theri little solo moment sing the
lyrics when the break part came...'But that's what makes the worls go round,
the up's and downs the carousels...' I heard you BOB....lol...
This guy played the bass like it was nobody's business....FLAWLESS!....the
bass was singing the words, and he and Victor did a call and response duel of
the basses with one another...unbelieveable moment...a Stanley Clark moment...

Instead of my trying to remember the exact order of the songs, I will
highlight the songs of the evening for me...

Hormones to the Head Phones - this song is so tight! I heard Prince all
through it...that Sexy Dancer appeal...mo' better bass...mo' better beat...

Yinin' and Yanging - This was the first version of it which had a jazzy
appeal to it...I dont know if my Soul Patrol honchos picked up on this - I
was catching titles at this point...Bela Fleck...George Benson
appeal...smooth jazz, funky hump to it...waxing your floors on a Saturday
    afternoon music...

    .......then they slid into.......

Yinin and Yangin', part two - okay this one was a toss between Sly and Prince
'Family Affair meets Alphabet Street which equals a funky tune...

Pretty Little Lady - 'Everybody wants my pretty little lady,...pretty little
girl...' At this point I wanted to get up and do 'The Bird'...Morris Day
style. This was slammin', with all of those breaks and pauses in it...you got
enough time to catch your breath and waited to see what he was going to do
    next...

Singing My Song - He closed the show with this and it was so 'Let Me
Entertain You' - Dont Call Me N*gger, Whitey-ish, - This 'turned the place
out' so to speak...sounded great live... 'La la la la, la la la la...' nice
    little ditty...catchy tune....good message...

Let me NOT leave out The Wooten Family's versions of PURPLE HAZE and IRONMAN
    - I almost fell off of the balcony...it came close enough to Hendrix, and I
am still trying to figure out who made the original IRONMAN - all I know is
when the lead guitar and beat drop - Up went my PFUNK fingers and that
'unDyvalike' head shaking started again, just like at the PFUNK concert I
went to...hard to keep your cool at a concert like this...being reserved was
not an option on some of this FUNKYMACNASTEE selections...If you were there,
    you'd know...

Okay, Im a Victor Wooten fan now for life...and his brothers can throw down
too. I am just AMAZED at how he can play the bass with lightning precision,
toss it to his brother or some one else and play another guitar...he tossed
it across the stage 3 times, flipped it, turned it upside down, rolled it
aorund his neck, etc...and DID NOT miss a lick....folks Im telling you if you
miss him, I DONT pity the FOOL...all of this for 3 and ONE HALF hours
    NON-STOP for 18 BUCKS...Lost my voice ya'll... Victor Wooten is a
    'BADDMOTORSCOOTER'...

CHICAGO- Iz You Ready To Yin and Yang?
    getreadygetreadygetreadygetready!!!!!!!

cant wait for him to come local again....Yes, the word for Victor Wooten is

                    'FUNKNASTILICIOUS'

Grace, Peace and 'ZENERGY' (VW) to all of you...
    DyvaNaye (sister of the Wooten's....lol)
Hercules, Hercules Hercules!!! to this Soul Patrol event...
