    A CELEBRATION OF WASHINGTON, D.C.’S CONTRIBUTIONS
    TO THE NATIONAL MUSIC SCENE

    WASHINGTON, D.C., August 26, 2005– On Friday, September 2, 2005, Live! on Woodrow Wilson Plaza will end its FREE summer performance series with a tribute to Van McCoy, the legendary singer, songwriter and producer, who was born and raised in Washington, D.C. The performance, featuring Herb Fame, of Peaches & Herb; Jean Carne; and the incomparable Melba Moore, is a culmination of a week-long celebration of Washington, D.C.’s stellar contribution to music.

    Van McCoy wrote and produced for Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Roberta Flack, Vikki Carr, Tom Jones, Nina Simone, Jackie Wilson, Gloria Lynn, Brenda and the Tabulations, Nat Cole, Melba Moore, Stacey Lattisaw, David Ruffin, The Shirelles, Chris Bartley, and Chris Jackson, among others. The 39 year old star was stricken with heart failure in his home in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey and without regaining consciousness, died July 6, 1979 at Englewood General Hospital. This program is produced in cooperation with Van McCoy Music Inc., Mattie Taylor, President & CEO.

    Other renowned performers scheduled to take the stage next week from 12:00 noon until 1:30 p.m. include:

    The Orioles (Monday, August 29), The Jewels (Thursday, September 1) and in honor of Keter Betts who was due to play at Live on Tuesday, August, 30, Live! will hold the “Jam for Keter.” All area musicians are invited to bring their instruments and jam in celebration of his wonderful contributions to music.

    Live is held on the Woodrow Wilson Plaza of the Ronald Reagan Building and international Trade Center, at 1300 Pennsylvania, Avenue Northwest. The cool café-style atmosphere of LIVE! on Woodrow Wilson Plaza is the hottest place in town to catch the best of DC entertainment!     The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), owner of the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center, is providing space and program support for this public performance series.
