    Can't hold back ...

I have to say that I find the whole idea of ranking one type of music
over another, based on their respective drum patterns, rather asinine.
While it may be a necessary evil to create genres along the dividing
lines of percussion (ie, you have to separate the records in the store
somehow) saying that one type of rhythm is "better" than another is
    patently absurd.

In the past I got a bit bored with most 4 on the floor production - but
that was my own fault: I was listening to the same, tired producers.
Some of my favorite albums of 2003 were techno albums (Matthew Dear,
Ricardo Villalobos) and they were rhythmically far more inventive than
some of the broken beat I heard. Look at someone like Phil Asher for
the best of both worlds: many of his mixes/productions are rooted in
4/4 disco yet truly stunning in their details of syncopation,
contrapuntal rhythms, etc. At the same time he is also able to make
some wicked broken beats. When he is working on a song, I doubt he
worries about how someone would pigeonhole his percussion, much less
whether one is better than another.

It's not the instrument - it's how you play it.

    [end rant]

    easy,
    pn

btw, John Beltran killed it last night. Rhythms from Puerto Rico,
Brazil, Cuba, and a bit of good ol' Detroit 4/4.
