i put "kind of blue" in my category of "everyone should own a copy". it's
the first miles record i bought and is my favorite of that period (i.e.
miles
in the 50s). like picasso, you can't pick just one "best" piece, you have
to
break it down (miles in the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s--i know, only 1/2 of the 70s,
80s & 90s--even though he died in 91).
i agree that for brubeck, a better selection would be "time out". i believe
that it's best to hear an album as a complete idea, than compilations.
"porgy & bess" is really good too--miles w/gil evans (i think brubeck does
one too). just as an addendum, miles re-interprets "my man's gone now"
(from
p&b) on his 80s live album "we want miles", kinda kool--you wouldn't know
the
tune till the head comes in!
