Reading this kind of post just reinforces my idea that not all opinions are
equal. Anyone who listens to "What's Going On" and says that it's overrated
CLEARLY doesn't understand what's going on. You don't even have 2 B a big
Marvin Gaye fan 2 realize that the man was very special; a cut above the
rest. I've worn the grooves out of many copies of this record, and it still
sends shivers down my spine.

What's particularly fun is playing this record with friends over (who
aren't familiar with the record) and watching them freak at what they're
listening 2. Ain't too many records that'll do that 2 an unitiated
listener. "Superfly" usually gets alot of really enthusiastic responses as
well, which is really cool; I get a real kick out of watching folks dig what
I listen 2 and getting them into it.

How 'bout U guys, are there any records that you've played 4 friends
which got them completely buggin', more than just the usual "hey man, this
is pretty cool"? Here's my list:

1)What's Going On- Marvin Gaye
2)Superfly- Curtis Mayfield
3)Dj Shadow- Endtroducing
4)Parliament- No album in particular; the deep groove usually freaks those
friends unitiated 2 the funk (but use the term to describe almost any music
nonetheless)
5)Anything released in the 70's by Donald Byrd or the Blackbyrds- Greyboy
Allstars fans are especially freaked when they hear this awesome jazz-funk,
mostly cos' they thought that this sound was something new.

Like I said, not 2 many artists get that reaction I'm talking about, can't
think of any others. Even super original stuff like Portishead hasn't
really done that.....
