    _free_ shit:

    check out http://www.charlieparkerjazzfestival.org/

aug 26 & 27, one show up near harlem, one in the lower east side. more
straight ahead than byrd/ayers/guru, but who cares? don't miss lou
donaldson's set. two years ago this show featured ray barretto!

lincoln center is also doing their free summer program:

mingus big band is on the night of the 26th, brazilfest is 27th.

    > Also, can anyone recommend any good radio stations or radio shows in NYC?

suggestions from my skewed perspective (more jazz/out than soul):

http://www.wfmu.org/ (91.1 FM): freest of the freeform. Check out Small
Change's program (schedule on the site), or Bronwyn & Elisabeth's. Or hell,
anything. Frequently unlistenable, but like a box o' chocolates, ya never
know. website now has concert listings under "arbitrary guide to popular
    culture".

WKCR, 89.9. Columbia U radio. Varied content, often jazz/world/acid.

WBGO, 88.3. Straight ahead no-commercial jazz. Gets tripped out in the wee
    hours.

    enjoy the trip,

    mL.
