ZERO 7 - BIG CHILL, LARMER TREE GARDENS, SALISBURY
Gig Played: Sat 5 Aug 2000

They might have a rep as the hottest act to emerge from the chill out scene
since Air, but something's wrong. It's Saturday, four pm on the dance stage
and Zero 7 are rocking it.

As everyone knows drowsy sun drenched dozings are what the Big Chill is all
about. A few beers, perhaps a nice deck chair and a large newspaper until
the sun sets. But Zero 7 are having none of that: musically dragging people
from their slumbers and dosing them up with a serious case of the funk.

A primary weapon is the use of the slap b-line. Take for example Porn
Theatre Usher's 'Me & Him', a veritable jump up hip hop sleaze anthem if
ever there was one. Great for leaping up and down to, very poor for
snoozing too. This Zero 7 bunch, what's their game eh?

Ignoring some unavoidably dancy Latin jazz workouts and ruff reggae, one
chilled cut prevails. Mos Def's 'Umi Says' might have been last year's best
record, but it clearly needed polishing. So thought a someone, who decided
to turn it into an epic string anthem.

And while we're not sure who's responsible, it doesn't seem a million miles
from a certain EP that made Zero 7 the next "Most likely too..." since MJ
Cole, Basement Jaxx or Air. Either way the assembled awake revellers and
chillsters seem to appreciate the music being played. So, Zero 7: howsabout
    an album eh?
