    Hi all,

Last week, I was supposed to be going to see Snowboy (Friday) and David
Holmes (Saturday). It looked like I was up for a damn good weekend of groovy
tunes, was I ever wrong! A friend and myself were going to both gigs, but,
we decided to get our tickets for DH on the Saturday, as we wanted to make
sure we were up for it (not as young and energetic as we used to be;-). Come
Friday night we were in an expectant mood, looking forward to 5 hours of
jazzy sounds, but low and behold, the gig was canceled, something we only
found out about at the venue.

We were a little crest fallen, having been anticipating it for the last a
couple of weeks, but these things happen, no biggy. So, its 11.30pm, we're
in the city centre, what to do? I know, I'd read about a soul and funk night
advertised as a Soul Clinic, in a club I'd been to before when they used to
have a Latin night, that was all right, good tunes, but the place was always
empty (they stopped the Latin night earlier this year, and became just
another chart, dance music club, I was there the first night of the change
over, and guess what, it was packed! Shame, people can't get down with good
tunes). So down we go, ask the girl on the door if the Soul night was on
upstairs, to which she answered, yes. We paid our poke and headed on up. As
soon as I entered the place I knew something was amiss, it was 11.45 (venue
opened at 11.30) and already they were playing house music, which wasn't
even advertised, and the people there were the usual trendy crowd that were
either drunk or on pills. My mate comes from a more commercial dance
background than me, so it didn't bother him too much, and as it was my idea
to go there, I put an a brave face and hoped things would get groovy before
    long.

By 1.00am my worst fears were confirmed, house, hadn't left the turntable,
and, the crowd were a seething, drunken, bug eyed, animal. I was fit to
flee, at this stage, but, my mate seemed to be into it, so I camped down,
and it wasn't until 1.30 hours, and two soakings with my own beer later,
that we finally left. I can safely say that it was the worst nights I have
had in a while, even though something similar happened two weeks earlier, at
a jazz groove club, which played mediocre tunes until 1.00am, and then 'till
3.00, when we left, it played house, again not as advertised. It didn't
overly bother me then, as I was with a lot more friends, and we just got
toasted;-). I got home about 4.00am a bit the worse for wear, and decided
the next day to knock the David Holmes gig on the head, regrettably, but I
wasn't in the mood after Friday nights fiasco.

Come Saturday night, a couple of friends called around, and we headed off
late, to a venue that one of my other friends has described as "kindergarten
for piss heads" (booze hounds), as you can watch a movie, or check out
several different acts, rock band, blues band, chart DJ. The smallest room
usually plays disco, so I tend to stay clear, but on Saturday, they played
60's and 70's soul, a smidgen of Indian and 60's psychedelica, which kept me
and my mates chuffed 'till closing. A good night was had be all, and went
some way towards making up for the previous night.

As you can see, I've had problems with clubs advertising one thing and then
playing something else (anyone else come across this). I'm sure there must
be decent clubs in Dublin (as a supposed, party capital of Europe, there
damn well ought to be), and going to the dodgy ones just crosses them off my
list (so, some good), it just seems they will be harder to find then I
    thought.
