Ok, so I just picked up the debut CD by Nikka Costa, and I've been listening
to it for a week now. I really like it. In spirit, it reminds me of the
first Mary J. Blige album, where the imperative was a seamless blending of
hip hop and soul. In execution, I am reminded of the first Maxwell album
because of diversity of vocal styles, off-kilter pop songwriting, and funky
grooves. This is much better than that really disappointing Anastacia LP.
And it's produced by NY DJ Mark Ronson (Samantha's brother). I haven't
really given the liner notes a good look, but I think I heard that Billy
Preston or someone like that was involved with some of the production.
Anyone else pick this up yet?
