Crate Soul Brothers newsletter #79: Music is what awakes within us

    Newsflash 08.03.2002

    Dear friends,

The most important news of the week is that from Saturday on our legendary Tilos Radio will broadcast on air in the next one month. We still haven't got a permanent frequency, but we hope it will change in a few months. For those who are not in the picture what Tilos is all about, here comes a short introduction, copy-pasted from the radio's site:

"(...)Tilos Radio was established as a pirate community radio station in Budapest in 1991 as a way of bringing the public's attention to the fact that there was at that time no legal framework for independent and community broadcasters. During the first years of its broadcasting, Tilos (which means "forbidden" in Hungarian) enjoyed wide public interest and has played a key role in the liberalisation of the airwaves in Hungary, which happened in 1995.

Tilos Radio has got a legal frequency license in 1995 and became a hot local community station in Budapest with its morning phone-in talk-shows and its cool music programmes, broadcasting 12 hours a day. Now Tilos is a key player in the cultural and lifestyle scene of Budapest. Meanwhile Tilos Radio has its fingers on the public pulse with its social thinking, minority oriented programmes, and its radical and tolerant attitude.

Tilos' services are mainly financed by listeners' donations and the income from fund-raising events, and partly by support from EU programmes, international NGO's and charity institutions.
In November 1999, Tilos Radio had to apply for a new frequency licence. Tilos Radio's application was for 24 hour a day broadcasting. Tilos didn't receive a new frequency licence - this means that the radio had to leave its current frequency in September 2000 (...)."

Last week's most heart-warming package came from Nik Weston, who sent his new "Music & Movement" double cd compilation (out soon on Climate label) with 21 instant classics. Sure, it's the compilation of the year so far! Listen to some gems in the mix.

And if we speak about heart-warming music, he are some nice words:

    "All music is what
awakes within us when we are
    reminded by the instruments;
It is not the violins or the clarinets -
It is not the beating of the drums -
Nor the score of the baritone singing
his sweet romanza; nor that of the men's chorus,
Nor that of the women's chorus -
It is nearer and farther than they."

Eunice Waymon - age 12 -, from the back cover of "Nina Simone - Here Comes The Sun" album (1971)

Keep on being reminded by the instruments till next week!
