A few of you might recall that a few years ago when we "relaunched" the Soul-Patrol website,
we did do with a focus on that great (but un-recognized) FUNK band known as "Defunkt". Our
friend Rickey Vincent even contributed an essay to the Soul-Patrol site analyzing the music &
career of "Defunkt".

Early on in the history of Soul-Patrol (back in the mid 1990's), Defunkt's website was one of
the inspirations of the P* Funk Review website and (as you will read if you visit the page)
Joseph Bowie (leader of Defunkt & brother of the late trumpet player Lester Bowie of the
AACM). At that time, I approached Lester Bowie for advice about how to proceed with my then
brand new website and he gave me some advice, via email, which I still continue to follow to
this day....
As a side note, Soul-Patrol's subtitle and overall focus ("Great Black Music From The Ancient
To The Future") is a phrase which is respectfully borrowed from the AACM as a shorthand way of
explaining EXACTLY what Soul-Patrol is trying to promote.

Anyhow, Lester Bowie is still writing to me and here is a short update from him...

Footnote: Joe Bowie is currently living in Holland married and Defunkt
still crosses the ocean to tour throughout Europe and Asia. Joe has a new
funk organization called Kosen-Rufu...something to hear and feel in the very
near future.
